The Diplomatic World team visited OZEN Reserve Bolifushi in December 2020. It was a magical experience, one that will be hard to forget for some time to come.
From the moment we got off the plane from rainy and chilly Brussels, the OZEN Reserve Bolifushi team took the best possible care of us. As we set foot on Bolifushi we knew right away that it was going to be something very special.
We were welcomed with a glass of rosé champagne and a foot massage, what else would you want after a long plane journey. After our relaxing massage, our Hiyani (meaning shadow in Dhihevi, the Maldivian language) showed us around the island and accompanied us to our Ocean Pool Suites, that was amazing! The villas are just a few steps away from the gentle waters of the lagoon and are equipped with an infinity pool. The villa included some special features such as a rain shower and a sunken indoor bath. We could not get tired of the panoramic views, every day waking up and going to sleep with a stunning view over the lagoon. Plenty of calm moments to reflect on life and reconnect with ourselves in harmony with the infinite natural beauty of The Maldives.
Soaking in the sunrise, a floating breakfast on the infinity pool with a view on the Indian Ocean. Pancakes, eggs, exotic fruits, croissants, Maldivian breakfast (dried tuna and coconut) and a bottle of Champagne. All served on two beautiful floating trays to enjoy while cooling off in the pool. Our day could not have started any better!
Nestled between the turquoise waters and the tropical, lushlandscape of the island, Elena spa provides an oasis of tranquillity and luxury, inviting guests to unwind and indulge. Guests can select from garden or over water treatment rooms, including the oversized VIP couples’ suite. Pamper your senses with signature rituals using ancient techniques of yogic healing, organic products, and nature-inspired techniques.
It was an immersive experience in over-water treatment rooms with glass floors, where we were lucky to spot baby sharks and other marine life, calmly swimming under us. The combination of massage, calm music and the view of the ocean is something incredible and relaxes your mind and body at the same time.
During our stay on Ozen Reserve Bolifushi, we were invited for a masterclass to cook and taste the traditional Maldivian breakfast, Mas huni, as well as yellowfin tuna curry. Mas huni is composed of dried tuna, onion, coconut, and chili. All ingredients are finely chopped and mixed with the grated meat of the coconut. The tuna is packed in water, drained and flaked. This dish is usually served with freshly baked Maldivian-style flatbread (known as roshi) and sweetened hot tea.
The food was delicious, the simple combination of tuna and coconut was something we never imagined, but it was nice and tasteful, a burst of fresh, spicy and zesty flavours We will try to replicate this dish in Brussels, but we hope that in the future Maldivian tuna exports to the EU will face less prohibitive import barriers than they currently face.
OZEN Reserve Bolifushi offered us plenty of memorable fine-dining experiences. One highlight was a private beach grill – with a vast choice of fresh fish and meats - in a very romantic setting surrounded by lanterns and the sights of Malé in the far distance, and under an incredible starry night sky.
Vista Del Mar Restaurant was offering every day different dishes to choose from, accompanied with a wide buffet with so many amazing appetizers and desserts.
Sangu Beach is a lovely spot for evening cocktails, located in a nice white sanded beach and next to the watersports center, what would be ideal if you come with children.
Origine is Bolifushi’s culinary highlight, the refined food was amazing and a must-try, all paired with a fine selection of wines from across the world by their expert sommeliers.
OZAR is the place to chillax and hang out in their comfy sofas or nets above the water in the evening watching the sunset over a nice cocktail (or mocktail).
Throughout the various dining experiences and restaurants, there was plenty of options for vegan and vegetarian customers.
When you visit the Maldives, snorkelling is a must! We explored the crystal clear, blue waters and had an unforgettable time. When snorkelling in Maldives it is like no other travel destination as you have an excellent visibility. The Maldives is one of the few destinations in the world where travellers can swim with the sharks. The species of sharks found in the reefs around the resorts are totally harmless. We saw so many different kind of fish such as sting-rays, clownfish, jackfish, and other types of coral reef fish, which gives you an opportunity to appreciate the rich biodiversity of The Maldives.
Snorkelling in Maldives is ideal for swimmers of all levels - from beginners to advanced - as there are already a lot of fish in the shallow waters.
As the sun begins to set around 17:00-17:30, stingrays and Jack fish descend upon the beach next to Sangu Beach for their daily feeding. The stingrays and Jack fish are usually not seen around the reef, but they come everyday for their feeding session! They are also VIP guests in OZEN Bolifushi!
Our resort was featuring an on-water-gym with a stunning ocean view. One of our team members was going everyday to the gym. The Maldives is perfect place to balance your mind and body, you lose every sense of time during your stay there. The food that they serve in the restaurants is healthy and fresh, the air you inhale is clean these are the things that we miss in our daily lives and which OZEN Bolifushi provides!
