The Maldives is a picture-perfect archipelago, situated in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and home to 1,190+ scattered islands. These tiny coral islands which are surrounded by white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, are grouped in a double chain of 26 atolls, held together by ring-shaped coral reefs. The country is famous for its beauty and is celebrated as one of the most ideal travel destinations in the world. Tourism began in Maldives in 1972 with just two resorts. Since then, tourism has flourished across the country and it has become the highest foreign income source for the economy.
After 4 months of closing the borders, the Maldives has reopened its borders to international tourists on 15th July 2020. For those who are frustrated by having to press pause on travel plans, this is a golden opportunity.
Maldives is made up of 1,190+ islands which lends itself naturally to social distancing. With social and physical distancing being lucrative in combating the spread of COVID-19, the unique geography alone makes for a wonderful reason as to why you should pack your bags and head to the island nation.
Amidst the reopening of the borders, several steps were taken to ensure the safety of tourists from arrival to departure. Tourist establishments are taking all recommended precautions and properties have implemented new cleanliness and hygiene protocols.
Adding to this is the one-island-one-resort concept, which the Maldives is famous for. This simply means that resorts are established on one island, away from the humdrum of the city and local island life. Besides staff and tourists, there are no extra guests living at these resorts. This also ensures that guests are given full privacy and isolation, especially if you are looking for a secluded getaway, filled with nothing but the lull of the ocean and the swaying of coconut palm fronds in the gentle breeze.
